Departmentally managed activities are typically one-to-three day conferences planned and implemented by Vanderbilt faculty and staff.  The target audience for these conferences is typically non-Vanderbilt physicians.

Jointly sponsored activities are those for which the primary content planning and implementation are the responsibility of a non-Vanderbilt organization that is also a non-profit, non-ACCME accredited provider.  The target audience for these conferences is typically non-Vanderbilt physicians.

Regularly scheduled series (RSS) are typically weekly or monthly CME activities that are planned by and presented to Vanderbilt School of Medicine faculty.  RSS include, but are not limited to, grand rounds, tumor boards, journal clubs, M&M conferences, case conferences, and user group meetings.

Enduring materials are non-live CME activities that “endure” over time.  The learning experience by the physician may take place at any time in any place, rather than only at one time and in one place as at a live activity.  Examples of enduring materials include monographs, DVDs and asynchronous internet activities.

Commercial support is defined as financial, or in-kind, contributions given by a commercial interest, which is used to pay all or part of the costs of a CME activity; typically this support is requested via an online application.  Commercial support is also referred to as “educational grants” or simply “grants;” however, grants from non-profit organizations, including governmental agencies, are exempt from the ACCME’s definition of commercial support and guidelines.
